The Spanish Women's National Football Team continues to make history. Having won the FIFA Women’s World Cup and UEFA Nations League in the space of just over six months, the national team was named Team of the Year at the 25th Laureus Awards gala, fighting off strong competition against the likes of Formula One’s Red Bull Racing, Rugby Union’s South Africa team and men’s football’s Manchester City.
Star players Ivana Andrés, Aitana Bonmatí and Salma Paralluelo collected the award, with national team coach, Montse Tomé, in attendance.
For her part, Aitana Bonmatí was also an individual award winner at this ceremony. The FC Barcelona player was named best sportswoman of the year, beating stars across the sporting landscape, include athletics’’ Sha’Carri Richardson, tennis’ Iga Swiatek and skiing’s Mikela Shiffrin. Bonmatí ‘s success is the latest in a series of awards for incredible play for club and country, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup Golden Ball and the the Balon d’Or Feminin and The Best FIFA Women’s Player award.
Paralluelo, meanwhile, was also nominated for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year – an incredible feat in which she competed the likes of Coco Gauff and Real Madid players Linda Caicedo and Jude Bellingham. Paralluelo’s nomination reflects the start of a prodigious career trajectory the young FC Barcelona player.
The Laureus Awards gala brings the most important names in the world of sport, past and present together year after year. With the 2024 edition held at Madrid’s prestigious Palacio de Cibeles, the eyes of the world were once again on Spain’s sporting capital. In addition to have four La Liga football clubs, the city also plays hosts to world-leading annual events, including the climax of cycling’s Vuelta a Espana, tennis’ Madrid Open and golf’s Open de Espana.
