Ahead of the international break, all three YallaVamos countries experienced exhilarating finales to the club seasons, yet again captivating their passionate fanbases, domestically and around the world.
There is no better place to start than Spain, which saw Spanish teams once again assert their dominance on an international level. In the men’s game, Real Madrid won an incredible 15th European title, defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 thanks to goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Jr. The win continues a period of dominance for the club which has seen six UEFA Champions League victories in the last 10 seasons, and completed the side’s treble this season, having won both La Liga and the Supercopa de Espana.
In the women’s game, FC Barcelona Femeni continue to set the standard across the world, completing a historic quadruple by adding the UEFA Women’s Champions League title to victories in the Liga F, Copa de la Reina and Supercopa de Espana. Goals from Spanish internationals Aitana Bonmati, the winner of this year’s Ballon d’Or, and club captain Alexis Putellas, saw the team win their third Champions League title in four years, defeating Lyon 2-0 in front of more than 50,000 fans in Bilbao’s San Mames stadium.
Across the border in Portugal, Benfica were also making history of their own in women’s football, completing a domestic quadruple by adding a victory in the final of the Taca de Portugal Feminina to earlier victories in the the Taca da Liga Feminina, the Campeonato Nacional Feminino, and the Supertaca de Portugal Feminina,. The season notably saw a record-breaking attendance of more than 18,000 fans for the Taca de Portugal Feminina final, with 21-year-old Portuguese star Kika Nazareth further adding to her credentials by finishing league top scorer and Player of the Season.
On the men’s side, a thrilling Liga Portugal season saw Sporting CP confirmed as champions with two matches to spare, sparking incredible celebrations in Lisbon’s main square, Marques do Pombal. In a highly competitive season, Sporting CP were unable to add more trophies to their cabinet, with FC Porto proving victorious in the Taca de Portugal, with an extra-time final win over Sporting, and Braga winning the Taca da Liga final versus Estoril, after a series of surprises in the competitions.
A similarly tight affair took place in Morocco’s Botola Pro league, with Raja Casablanca winning the league by one point from AS FAR. Raja’s 3-0 victory over MC Oujda saw the club finish the league campaign unbeaten to claim their 13th title in history. Moroccan teams also enjoyed success on a continental level, with RS Berkane reaching the final of the CAF Confederation Cup, before narrowly lowing the final to Egypt’s Zamalek in front of 52,000 fans, and Wydad AC reaching the final of the inaugural African Football League, losing a close final to South African side Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate, with over 95,000 fans attending over the two legs.
Elsewhere, AS FAR continued their domination of the Moroccan Women’s Championship, winning the title for the 9th consecutive season. Internationally, Moroccan clubs also performed well, with only the South African team Mamelodi Sundowns defeating Sporting Casablanca and AS FAR in the CAF Women’s Champions League, who finished runner-up and in third place respectively.
